Why and How to Avoid Soil Consolidation

Moisture and gravity cause soils to consolidate, and consolidation increases with depth because of the overburden pressure exerted by soil and water above any depth.

Whilst overburden pressure increases with depth: soil density does not. Soil density reaches a maximum when the friction between soil particles is ≥ the overburden pressure.

Most compaction occurs when soil is wet and the friction between soil particles is least, and compact soil has smaller pores and a smaller total porosity, which mean smaller water holding capacity, plant-available water capacity and permeability.

Only Deep Seedbed Conditioner (DSC) or a Deep Bedformer Conditioner (DBC) can create and perpetuate a 300 mm deep, root- reinforced, loose, well-aerated seedbed, and the use of these machines does not require any extra operations.

63% more soil water was extracted by DSC™ crops than NT crops. Note the water content of the compact NT subsoil deprived the crop of oxygen for most of the growing season.
